Webinar: Following in Phyfe’s Footsteps: Classical Revival furniture of late 19th century New York
Join our curator, Grant Quertermous, for a webinar on Thursday, April 18 at 7:00 pm. This lecture will examine the renewed interest in cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe’s furniture during the late 19thcentury, decades after his 1847 retirement, and two New York cabinetmakers who began to produce furniture copied from and inspired by Phyfe’s pieces during the emerging Colonial Revival movement. Ernest Hagen and J. Matthew Meier repaired aging Phyfe furniture, executed copies of Phyfe chairs to supplement a client’s heirloom suite, and took inspiration from his work in the creation of their own unique furniture designs, several examples of which are found in our collection.
