Join our Webinar – Millford: A Classical Collection in a Greek Revival Masterpiece
Join CAHPT’s Curator & Director of Collections Grant Quertermous for an in-depth look at the significant collection of American decorative arts at Millford. This lecture will highlight some of the latest acquisitions and recent research discoveries about objects found in the Sumter County, South Carolina, mansion, which is one of the greatest extant examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States.
The Millford collection contains numerous examples of Duncan Phyfe & Son furniture commissioned specifically for the house between 1839 and 1842 by its original owner, John Laurence Manning. This important furniture, dating from the twilight of Phyfe’s six-decade career, will be discussed as well as Mr. Jenrette’s efforts to locate and return examples of this furniture to Millford. Today, the collection reflects the success of Jenrette and William L. Thompson in acquiring original Manning objects and also showcases numerous other important pieces found during the nearly five decades they spent in the pursuit of American decorative arts.
