Happily residing at Ayr Mount now is the Philadelphia Tambour Desk and Bookcase recently donated to the Trust from Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Tananbaum. This exceptional piece of case furniture is firmly attributed to Scottish-born cabinetmaker John Aitken (1770-1814), who is celebrated as the maker of a nearly identical example for George Washington. We think Aitken would be pleased to know this tambour desk and bookcase are on display at Ayr Mount, a house built by fellow Scotsman William Kirkland (1768-1836). Celebrating Richard Hampton Jenrette’s Life and Legacy Dick Jenrette was a remarkable human being and a giant in the field of historic preservation. His family here at Classical American Homes as well as his countless friends and admirers continue to mourn his passing. Just weeks before his death, Dick was busy charting the future of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust, the organization he established exactly a quarter-century ago. Christmas in the Ayr Ayr Mount was decorated for the holidays with a bounty of freshly cut flowers, naturals, berries, holly, fruit, and evergreens from December 1 – 15. The exhibition showcased a talented group, whose furniture, plaster casts, drawings, and busts fit seamlessly amongst the home’s existing decor. Dear Friends, Donors, and Preservationists, We are excited to announce the release of our 2017 Annual Report! This special report features a memorial to CAHPT founder Dick Jenrette, who passed away in April of 2018. The cover of this report features the double parlors at Roper House. The Roper House is featured prominently in this report in honor of the 50th anniversary of Dick’s career in preservation, which began in 1968 with his purchase of the house. Historic photos dating back to the 1870s and through the present illustrate the house’s history through the Siegling, Guggenheim, Hastie, and Jenrette eras. …more
