“Kershaw & Sumter Counties: Magnificence in the Midlands”

Classical American Homes Preservation Trust is proud to partner with the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Historic Columbia Foundation, and the Columbia Museum of Art for the 2022 MESDA Conference on September 15-17, celebrating the decorative arts of the South Carolina Midlands. After being rescheduled from 2021 due to the pandemic, this much-anticipated program will convene decorative arts researchers, collectors, and enthusiasts in Columbia for a weekend of site visits, scholarship, and conviviality.

Classical American Homes is pleased to offer registrants one of these rambles, “Kershaw & Sumter Counties: Magnificence in the Midlands” with a private tour and lunch at CAHPT’s Greek Revival icon, Millford. During conference lectures, registrants will hear the latest research from the CAHPT team. Curator and Director of Collections Grant Quertermous will present “South Carolina Stonecutters and their Work in the South Carolina Midlands,” Director of Operations Dr. Corbett Toussaint will share “Scots-Irish Cabinetmakers in the South Carolina Midlands,” and former Co-President Peter Kenny will provide further context for Millford with “The Material Worlds of the Hampton and Manning Families.”

South Carolina’s decorative arts have never looked better–and now it is time to celebrate and enjoy the architecture, landscape, and material culture of the Midlands.
