In Memory of Jane Mack Gould

One of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust’s most enduring and generous annual fund supporters, Jane Mack Gould, has left the Trust a significant bequest through her estate. Her unrestricted gift to the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust general fund will help support preservation, research, and education on American architecture, landscapes, and decorative arts.

Jane was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Mack of Bethesda, Maryland. She graduated with Distinction in English from Duke University in 1960 and received a certificate with Distinction from the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration in 1961.

Jane began her career as a research assistant at Smith Barney before moving to Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ), the pioneering Wall Street investment bank which Dick Jenrette co-founded. She became DLJ’s first woman stockholder in 1969 and eventually rose to senior vice president and director of the firm’s Alliance Capital Management Corporation. In 1985, Dick lauded Jane as a ”star performer”in the New York Times. Former colleagues remember her as one of the most powerful women on Wall Street from the 1970s onward at a time when few women were portfolio managers.

In addition to their association through DLJ, Jane and Dick shared an interest in decorative arts and architecture. Jane regularly attended Dick’s CAHPT patron parties and social events in New York and Charleston.

Jane served on several boards, including: Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Board of Directors, NY Center for Visual History advisory board, and the United-States Japan Foundation. For more than a decade beginning in 1986, she served on the Smithsonian Institution Investment Policy Committee of the Board of Regents, where she helped to restore the endowment after Black Monday in 1987.

Jane also supported a variety of philanthropic causes, including: Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, Bard College, Calvary Hospital NYC, Classical American Homes Preservation Trust, Diocese of New York Episcopal Charities, Duke University Alumni Association, Hospice of the Western Reserve, Institute of Fine Arts at NYU, and the Parrish Art Museum.

Classical American Homes Preservation Trust is tremendously grateful for Jane Mack Gould’s long support and generous bequest.
