Classical American Homes Preservation Trust and The Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation is proud to recognize Dick Jenrette’s singular achievement of 50 years of preservation in 2018. With his 1968 purchase of the 1838 Robert W. Roper House on Charleston’s High Battery, Dick Jenrette embarked on a life-long adventure that would establish him as one of the leading preservationists in the country. Over the past 50 years, he has acquired and cared for:
• more than a dozen historic houses
• over 1,500 acres of protected land
• up to 4,000 works of art and period furniture
• and received over two dozen awards for his contributions in the field, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award
Many of the historic houses that are owned by Dick Jenrette or Classical American Homes Preservation Trust are nationally recognized historic places from the Carolinas to New York:
• Roper House (Charleston, SC) and Millford (Pinewood, SC) are National Historic Landmarks
• Ayr Mount (Hillsborough, NC) and the George F. Baker Houses (New York City) are on the National Register for Historic Places
• Edgewater (in the Hudson River Valley) is part of an area identified as a National Historic District
Nearly 250,000 people have come through the doors of the Roper House, Edgewater, Ayr Mount, Millford, and Cane Garden to experience the beauty and historic significance of these houses and collections, including many objects original to the houses. Dick’s commitment to historic preservation leaves a rich legacy of architectural heritage for future generations.
Join us in celebrating this golden anniversary by visiting one of the houses, participating in one of our programs, and sharing in our mission to preserve American classical architecture and art
