Friends from Wells Fargo and The Mint Museum gathered at the George F. Baker House on Wednesday, March 4 to kick off the 26th Armory Show. The night was a joyous celebration and featured the unveiling of a work recently obtained by The Mint Museum with Wells Fargo’s support. Summer Wheat‘s With Side With Shoulder was dramatically revealed to the guests by Mint CEO and President Todd Herman and Mint Chief Curator Jen Sudul Edwards, as they pulled away a silk drape to reveal a colorful, textured painting on aluminum mesh. Classical American Homes and The Decorative Arts Trust (DAT) were pleased to welcome a talented group of speakers and an enthusiastic audience to our fourth Emerging Scholars Colloquium. Held on Sunday, January 26, at the George F. Baker Carriage House, this event sold out and was attended by over 100 guests, many of whom joined us for the Bloody Mary and Ham Biscuit Benefit Brunch which followed. The carriage house at 69 E. 93rd Street was the site of the second Richard Hampton Jenrette Memorial lecture the evening of December 10, 2019. Entitled, The Consummation of Earthly Bliss: Dick Jenrette’s Edgewater, the lecture was delivered by CAHPT’s own Peter Kenny and served as a fitting close to our year-long celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of its purchase by Dick in 1969. Scottish Connections In October 2019, Ayr Mount participated in a town-wide celebration of Scottish heritage called Outlandish Hillsborough. This exhibit was on view during the weeks surrounding the festival and featured Scottish artifacts, 18th and 19th-century engravings of Scotland, immigration patterns, food, curiosities and a wee bit of fun facts. Of special interest was a ca. 1930 Buchanan Child’s Dancer Ensemble on loan from the Scottish Tartans Museum and Heritage Center, Inc. in Franklin, NC. This sublime ensemble is in pristine condition and includes sporrans, jewelry, hose, doublet, waistcoat and other original pieces. The exhibit concluded on October 20 — …more
Over the past several months students from the Clemson University / College of Charleston Graduate Program in Historic Preservation have spent time at the Roper House and completing a Historic Structure Report. The students researched the history of the home, studied the architecture, and reported on the home’s condition, identifying historically significant and original features. The detailed report includes a chronology of the house’s history starting on May 25, 1839, when Robert Roper purchased the lot of land, and through December 10, 2018, when Classical American Homes Preservation Trust took ownership of the property, devised by CAHPT founder Richard H. …more
Earlier this summer we were lucky to have the fifth grade students from Laurence Manning Academy in Manning, SC come out to Millford for a tour of the house and grounds. The students spent time reflecting on their visit and created drawings and thank you letters for site manager Louie Hall and docent Mrs. Dot.
