Thank you to all of our friends and donors who joined us for the second Richard Hampton Jenrette Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Peter Kenny presented on Dick’s passion for collecting, focusing on his beloved Edgewater and the 50th anniversary of its purchase. Peter’s lecture was followed by a reception at the George F. Baker House, where guests were able to peruse the home while enjoying cocktails and canapes with friends, old and new! This event was made possible in part by support from Wells Fargo.

Scottish Connections In October 2019, Ayr Mount participated in a town-wide celebration of Scottish heritage called Outlandish Hillsborough. This exhibit was on view during the weeks surrounding the festival and featured Scottish artifacts, 18th and 19th century engravings of Scotland, immigration patterns, food, curiosities and a wee bit of fun facts. Of special interest was a ca. 1930 Buchanan Child’s Dancer Ensemble on loan from the Scottish Tartans Museum and Heritage Center, Inc. in Franklin, NC. This sublime ensemble is in pristine condition and includes sporrans, jewelry, hose, doublet, waistcoat and other original pieces. The exhibit concluded on October 20 …more
Over the past several months students from the Clemson University / College of Charleston Graduate Program in Historic Preservation have spent time at the Roper House and completing a Historic Structure Report. The students researched the history of the home, studied the architecture, and reported on the home’s condition, identifying historically significant and original features. The detailed report includes a chronology of the house’s history starting on May 25, 1839, when Robert Roper purchased the lot of land, and through December 10, 2018, when Classical American Homes Preservation Trust took ownership of the property, devised by CAHPT founder Richard H. …more
Earlier this summer we were lucky to have the fifth grade students from Laurence Manning Academy in Manning, SC come out to Millford for a tour of the house and grounds. The students spent time reflecting on their visit and created drawings and thank you letters for site manager Louie Hall and docent Mrs. Dot.
