Recently, Classical American Homes Preservation Trust was the recipient of a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Tananbaum of New York City of an exceptionally fine late eighteenth-century, Philadelphia tambour desk and bookcase. Firmly attributed to John Aitken (1770-1814), this tambour desk and bookcase is virtually identical to one made by the cabinetmaker for President George Washington that is now at Mount Vernon and is documented as having cost $145.00 and as being delivered to Washington’s home in Philadelphia on March 13, 1797 . The only difference between President Washington’s tambour desk and bookcase and the one given to …more

The Classical Ideal at Ayr Mount
On September 20th, Ayr Mount served as the second stop on Classical American Homes’ The Classical Ideal: Music and Architecture in Harmony concert series, bringing live music inside the house for the first time since its Bicentennial celebration in 2015. The evening began with a reception on the back terrace, as the setting late-summer sun provided golden views of the grounds and a pleasant environment for the 50 friends and supporters who joined us to enjoy a cocktail before the concert. …more

Prior to the concert, a small group joined CAHPT Co-President Peter Kenny for an exclusive tour of the house, detailing the history of its owners and the lineage of the furniture and art on display, much of it original to the home. Susan Donaldson’s …more
