The Classical Ideal at Millford

On Saturday, September 23, the culmination of our week-long series of concerts was held at Millford in Pinewood, SC.  Robert deMaine and Simon Adda-Reyss played a repertoire that featured Camille Saint-Saëns, François Couperin, Rachmaninoff and featured an original composition by deMaine, entitled Étude-Caprice No. 3 in G, “Brésil” for solo cello.               Millford, considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, was an ideal setting for this intersection of music and architecture.  This sixth Music at Millford concert in the double parlor saw a new and returning audience …more

Ceilidh at Ayr 2017

The Cèilidh at Ayr, celebrating the Kirkland family’s Scottish heritage, was held on Saturday, October 21st at Ayr Mount.   The crowd of over 450 people enjoyed a day of music, friendship, crisp autumnal weather, and Scottish stories. Piobadh na Triantan (Gaelic for Piping in the Triangle) opened the festival with their rousing bagpipes filling the autumn air.  John Saxon and Evelyn Judson piped during the mid-day session and explained how the bagpipe works plus a bit about the history of the instrument.      Interspersed with the bagpipes were two Celtic bands.  Hailing from Alabama, Chambless & Muse (comprised of Jil Chambless …more

Classica Americana – Under the Covers by Peter Kenny

This ca. 1903 photograph is a last look back at an era and a precise historical document of the way the double parlor at Millford looked at the moment this great Greek Revival mansion changed hands from its original owner, John Laurence Manning, to New Yorker Mary Clark Thompson.  It is a fascinating document full of tantalizing evidence about how life was lived in the finest room at Millford during the Manning’s tenure.  One of the more informative aspects of the view is that all of the seating furniture except for the two large Jacobean armchairs at the center of …more

The Classical Ideal at Ayr Mount

On September 20th, Ayr Mount served as the second stop on Classical American Homes’ The Classical Ideal: Music and Architecture in Harmony concert series, bringing live music inside the house for the first time since its Bicentennial celebration in 2015.  Once again, the combination of Ayr Mount’s original pianoforte, classical music, and talented musicians set in an intimate parlor proved sublime. The evening began with a reception on the back terrace, as the setting late-summer sun provided golden views of the grounds and a pleasant environment for the 50 friends and supporters who joined us to enjoy a cocktail before the concert. …more

The Classical Ideal at Edgewater

We began our week-long concert series at Edgewater on Sunday, September 17th, graced with a warm and sunny late-summer afternoon.  Dick Jenrette graciously opened his home to over sixty friends and supporters, who enjoyed cocktails and light fare on Edgewater’s front porch overlooking the lush Catskill Mountains, just steps from the banks of the Hudson River.  Prior to the concert, a small group joined CAHPT Co-President Peter Kenny for an exclusive tour of the house, detailing the history of its owners and the lineage of the furniture and art on display, much of it original to the home.  Susan Donaldson’s …more
